Calm Abiding and Clear Seeing: an afternoon of practice
November 21 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM
In person and by Zoom
Calm abiding (also known shamatha or shinay) is the necessary foundation for all Dharma practices. We rest evenly in whatever arises in experience, gradually building our capacity in attention. Calm abiding is nonreactive attention imbued with stability, flexibility, clarity, and openness.
Calm abiding temporarily interrupts distraction and conflicting emotions. On the basis of stable attention, we can cultivate clear seeing or insight (also known as vipashyana or lhatong). Insight dissolves the misperception that is the root cause of confusion, attachment, aversion, jealousy, and pride. We come to know directly the true nature of reality and all phenomena.
Join us for a day of practice at the Portland vicarage, or participate online by Zoom.
All levels of experience are welcome. Register here.
Following the day of practice, teacher George will be available for one-on-one interviews.
You are also invited to a potluck supper from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the vicarage. Check the calendar for more information and registration.
