Morning Shamatha and Qigong
Morning Shamatha and Qigong
These are ongoing, drop-in, online-only sessions led by George Draffan.
Sitting meditation (shamatha, “evenly abiding”) is a simple but challenging practice of being present with whatever arises. We begin by breathing with awareness, and gradually build the capacity to experience sensations, feelings, and thoughts in stable and clear attention.
Movement practices (qigong, “breath-energy practice”) include the Eight Pieces of Brocade, the Eighteen Movements of Shibashi, Standing Like a Tree, and more. Science is just beginning to measure how meditation and mindful movement can radically improve physical and mental health. You can join and practice qigong at the Natural Awareness website.

Appreciating the Shangpa Kagyu Lineage : Day 1
The Shangpa practice lineage of Tibetan Buddhism was founded by the 11th century yogi Khyungpo Naljor, and based primarily upon the teachings of the wisdom dakini Niguma. Khyungpo Naljor travelled to India seven times receiving teachings and empowerments from more than 150 accomplished Indian gurus.
Niguma instructed Khyngpo Naljor to keep the teachings restricted to transmission from one teacher to one student for seven generations. In the 19th century, Jamgon Kongtrol collected and preserved many of the tradition’s practices and in the 20th century, the first Kalu Rinpoche spread them worldwide. Today at Dekeling, our community culture and practice is deeply shaped by these spiritual roots.
Everyone is welcome to explore with us as we study and celebrate this beautiful path. Later in the year, there will be an opportunity to learn and participate in a Shangpa practice at Dekeling.

The Concise Practice of Chenrezig
Chenrezig is the embodiment of compassionate mind. Join us at the Vicarage for a 3-hour teaching and practice session of Chenrezig, in the abbreviated form. No experience is necessary, we’ll practice with very brief instruction woven in as we go.
Chenrezig practice helps one cultivate compassion, bodhicitta, and wisdom. Benefits include purifying negative karma and obscurations, increasing positive qualities, attracting blessings, receiving protection. There are many Chenrezig practices. This one was offered to us by Khenchen Rinpoche.
This practice includes chanting, visualization and mantra. No empowerment is needed. All are welcome. No experience is necessary.
Each person will receive a new text. Bring paper for taking notes. If you’d like to stay for lunch afterwards, bring it with you. We’ll take a brief tea break mid-way, complements of the Green Tara practice group.

We’ll take a tea break in between completion of the first offering and the second. Tea provided by Shamatha Buddies.

White Tara Sadhana Practice Weekend
Among the many expressions of enlightened activity, White Tara manifests as the luminous wisdom that protects life and reveals the indestructible clarity of mind itself. Her seven eyes perceive the suffering and potential of all beings, and her boundless compassion restores balance to the elements of body and awareness.
To engage in her sadhana is to enter a direct relationship with awakened presence—to draw upon the inexhaustible vitality of compassion and to dedicate that strength to the welfare of all beings.
White Tara is revered as the embodiment of enlightened activity expressed through the radiant energy of compassion and long life. Her practice is treasured across all Tibetan traditions as a profound method to remove obstacles, extend life, and cultivate the innate clarity of awareness.
Unlike worldly longevity, the life White Tara protects and nourishes is the awakened continuum of wisdom and compassion—the unbroken thread of bodhicitta that sustains the path for the benefit of beings. Through mantra, visualization, and meditation, practitioners merge their awareness with hers, purifying obscurations and revealing the mind’s natural brilliance.
During this two-day gathering, we will:
- Receive concise instruction on the meaning and stages of the sadhana, emphasizing the union of method and wisdom.
- Engage in guided sessions of visualization and mantra recitation.
- Reflect together on White Tara as both deity and mirror of our own luminous nature..
This program is open to those who have received the White Tara empowerment (wang) from any qualified teacher.

Fourth Saturday Tonglen
Monthly Saturday Tonglen
Fourth Saturday of each month
10-11:00 AM (Pacific time)
This practice session takes place in this Zoom room.
Tonglen (Taking and Sending) is a meditation practice that uses altruistic intention and visualization to counter some of the greatest obstacles to awakening. Taking and Sending is a subset of Tibetan Mind Training (Lojong) practice.
All students are welcome. Come any time between 10 and 11AM and stay as long as you like. Meditations are guided by a teacher. Beginners are welcome.
Tonglen reduces selfishness and self-centered suffering; purifies the negative habit-patterns that limit one’s ability to experience loving-kindness, compassion and wisdom; and cultivates the awakening heart (bodhicitta), a cause of good meditation, equanimity and joy.
Tonglen engages all six of the perfections: giving, ethics, patience, joyous effort, meditation, and wisdom. Though highly efficacious in reducing suffering and increasing strength and pliancy of both heart and mind, tonglen is a simple practice that can be done in formal meditation and also be easily carried in one’s daily activities.

Turning the Mind Toward the Dharma
Turning the Mind to the Dharma is a four-part contemplation that is often considered just a preliminary, but it turns out to be the foundation of fruitful meditation practice. When we contemplate precious human life, the truth of impermanence, the inevitability of karma, and the faults of samsara, we see more deeply the nature of our life, aspire to make our life meaningful, and turn the mind toward the genuine refuge of the Three Jewels. This four evening series will explore traditional contemplations and explore ways we can adapt them to their own lives. This series is suitable for all levels of poractitioners, from total beginners to lifelong meditators. The Four Thoughts always inspire motivation and insight.

The Poetry of the Bodhisattva's Way
The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicaryavatara) is a unique, epic poem on the bodhisattva path of compassion and wisdom. Shantideva’s poem explores and inspires the reader to awaken mind and heart, and to perfect the bodhisattva qualities of generosity, ethics, patience, enthusiasm, meditation, and wisdom. Shantideva’s practice of “equalizing and exchanging self and other” is also a powerful introduction to the classic Tibetan practices of mind training (lojong) and taking and sending (tonglen). This four evening series will explore boidhisattva poetry through chanting, meditation, and discussion.

Are we born with a certain karma and that’s our fate? Let’s explore how we create the world we live in, and how it’s possible to see more clearly and act more intentionally. Topics to be explored include karma, kleshas, the six realms of samsara, and the three turnings of antidote, recognize, transform. Fall Garden Cleanup and Lunch at the Vicarage
Fall Garden Cleanup and Lunch at the Vicarage - Sat Oct 25
Join us at the Vicarage for a 'come-one-come-all' Fall garden work party at the Vicarage on Saturday, October 25th. We'll arrive between 9:30 and 10:00 AM and work for 2 hours. After, you can join in a warm soup and bread lunch made by others (it's fine to bring something if you want, or not) and some time with sangha. We'll be done by 2 or 3 PM for those who stay for lunch.
The projected forecast is 54 degrees with light rain. It's likely to change as we get closer. If it looks like it will be wet, consider bringing a change of shoes or socks to wear in the Vicarage, so we can keep the mud at bay. If you want gloves, bring some. At this point we only have 2 pairs over here. We have a few tools, but while we grow our collection, maybe you can bring your trowel or borrow one from a friend for the day?
If you'd like to come, but you're not physically able to garden, email Lekshe and she'll send you the list of inside tasks that we could use some help with. No bending or lifting in these jobs.
We'll put the garden to sleep for the season, while leaving some seed pods and so on for the birds and other creatures. Excellent practice.
Ngöndro Series : Mandala Practice
Ngöndro Series
Ngöndro is a series of practices taught in every school of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The practice of Ngöndro helps clear away obstacles and strengthens the accumulation of merit and wisdom. Gradually body and mind are ripened with view, meditation, and experience conducive to forward momentum in understanding and direct experience.
Ngöndro consists of two categories of practice:
the ‘outer preliminaries’ of The Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind to Dharma (precious human birth, impermanence and death, karma and the defects of samsara). Students work individually, guided by Lama Lekshe or Teacher George for this practice for about 7 hours over time.
and the ‘inner preliminaries’ of Refuge, Vajrasattva Practice, Mandala Offering and Guru Yoga, each of which require a little over 100,000 repetitions of a brief practice.
In 2026, our Ngondro students will receive instruction in Vajrasattva, Mandala and Guru Yoga. (Sincere students just beginning can get ‘catch up’ teachings from our teachers.) There is an on-going, open Ngöndro Practice Group as well.
2026 Ngondro: Vajrasattva Practice
Vajrasattva practice is a powerful way to purify body, speech and mind from confusion and previous harmful actions. Our traditional approach uses recitation of liturgy, visualizations, and mantra recitation, as well as extending the practice beyond formal mediation to daily life.
